Your upper body needs the best body building workout to make consistent gains. It’s important – before you start the process – to understand your limits. That way, you know what your bench marks are and you can blast past them as you train.
When you are focusing on your upper body gains, you need to focus at the outset on these key muscle groups: shoulders, chest, back and arms. Of course, you have a wide selection of choices for working each out, so you should switch it up from time to time.
First, never train the same group of muscles two times in a row. If you train your chest muscles on Monday, don’t do them Tuesday. A fantastic way to break it up is to target the back and chest on day one, then your arms and shoulders on day two. Chest exercises include the bench press: flat, incline and decline. You can use barbells or dumbbells. Try cable flyes, dumbbell flyes, etc. Change it up until you find what works for you.
On the following day you can hit your shoulder muscles, biceps and tri’s. For your shoulders, try: shrugs, seated dumbbell presses, side lat raises and the front dumbbell raise (alternating arms).
Concentrating on your biceps, the first choice is standing barbell curls. Also try the alternating dumbbell curl, incline dumbbell curl and the preacher curl. That last one is taking a curl bar on a preacher bench and hitting those arms hard with focused curling.
Concentrating on your biceps, the standing barbell curl or alternating dumbbell curls are classic. Other solid choices are concentration curls, preacher curls and incline dumbbell curls. You’ll need a preacher curl bench to do the preacher curl, obviously.
Finally, hit your triceps. They’re the big dogs on the back of your arm, or should be. To focus on them, try out the standing cable press-down (the lat machine), old fashioned dips, the rope extension (overhead) and the dumbbell extension. French curls are challenging, too.
Get with a personal trainer or someone that can show you in person and check your form, that way you won’t wind up injured.
